Solved: Windows 7 Upgrade Best Buy Support

The big question here is of course whether or not these deals will be Best Buy-specific, or if they are world-wide. Pricing information for Windows 7 will be made available later this month. Also note that Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional will be the only available versions in the Western world.

Apple isn’t the only one coming up with some seriously aggressive pricing schemes; a leaked memo from Best Buy indicates that Microsoft is willing to price Windows 7 upgrades pretty low too, but not as low as Snow Leopard, though. Still, the memo includes some interesting facts and also reveals the dates for when the upgrade program runs. Also, a table comparing the various upgrade prices of both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard can be found inside. The memo also reveals the pre-order prices of Windows 7 starting June 26, but these deals may very well be Best Buy-specific. Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade will cost 49.99 USD, while Windows 7 Professional upgrade will go for 99.99 USD.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade

There is a reason for that, Microsoft has the customer by the proverbial balls. Microsoft know that they can keep ratchetting up the price so that it is just expensive enough to gouge every cent out of the end users wallet but not enough to make it desirable in moving to an alternative operating system. They have been doing this for years with StarOffice; push up the price high enough but not too high that the cost of moving over to StarOffice is cheaper than continuing with Microsoft Office.

One typically pays for Windows 7 as a pre-installed OS, part of the purchase of a new machine, guaranteed by the OEM to work on that machine. Since MS Office comes with more functionality out of the box than iWork does, you’re kind of comparing apples and oranges. A more accurate comparison would be MS Office on Windows and MS Office on Mac. Personally, I think Microsoft should extend the discount Win 7 upgrades beyond July 11. The low prices would mean more sales to Vista users, and the move would be good PR for Redmond, which has suffering through months of embarrassing — and deserved — Vista bashing. Compared to current upgrade prices for Vista, the Windows 7 deals are relatively cheap.

Without question, OSX is equal or better than any of the Windows 7 editions, the only benefit is sunk investment in applications that are Windows only…. But that goes away with every new version when vendors won’t keep up with new versions for the new Windows OS in a timely fashion. In many ways Leopard versus Vista was a schooling in small vendors getting their act together for Leopard quickly, while the big, safe, established vendors had problems or unsupported software for a longer time under windows. If you’re not, than the price comparison falls flat on its ass.

What the public need to be informed of is this has been going on for years and things won’t change until they as end users bight the bullet and make the switch. If they look at the long term costs they would realise that there are better alternatives that may have a slightly up front cost but long term they are considerably cheaper. I’d actually pay for the Mac upgrade, and considering the use of expensive IPS LCD screens and quality hardware, the iMac actually checks out as a good deal to boot. The cost comparisons never factor in that those inexpensive PC’s get garbage TN LCD screens, junk keyboards and such.

According to the leaked Best Buy memo, the program starts June 26, and will end October 22 when Windows 7 gets released. What this means is that buyers of new computers with Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate pre installed within this timeframe will get a free upgrade for Windows 7. This also goes for boxed retail copies of Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. Windows Vista Home Basic isn’t part of the deal, but I’m not even sure if they still sell that crippled operating system. Windows 7 upgrade costs are infinitely more expensive than upgrade costs of some alternative OSes. Sure, it will still be infinitely more expensive than zero, but the daily cost would be so low that the result won’t matter.

Upgrading my family’s 3 MacBooks to the latest OS will only cost me $49!! Apple still is a hardware company that makes software in order to sell the hardware. Best Buy’s memo also took a shot at the much-maligned Vista by saying that Windows 7 is much more than simply a “Vista that works.” Given the positive previews and high hopes placed on Win 7’s shoulders, let’s hope the memo is right.

Constantly playing whack-a-mole trying to suppress each Linux offering as it comes to market is likely to keep Microsoft utterly distracted and it will also cost them a pretty penny to the OEMs complete profit. As soon as any OEM offers a Linux option that is visible to the public … Microsoft will pay the OEM to take the Linux machine off the market. If one were allowed to purchase an alternative OS under the same circumstances, there is simply no way that it would not work better than Windows. Your premise that it is “better pay for something that works than having nothing at all” is quite true, but the only problem with it is that it is not Windows 7 that is the product likely to be the one that works. IWork is a very good piece of work , but it doesn’t come with new Macs, and costs 79 EUR, while Microsoft Office 2007 costs 69 at retail here. And Office is a lot more full-featured (comes with Word/Excel/PowerPoint/OneNote).

In the Windows world, people are used to buying hardware that more closely matches their needs for a lower pricer than that of a Mac, negating the price difference in operating system – and then some. Upgrades to Windows 7 Home Premium, which includes improvements to Vista’s sluggish-yet-pretty Aero interface as well as multitouch features, will set Vista users back just $49.99, according a leaked Best Buy memo posted by Engadget. Updates to Windows 7 Professional, targeted at business users, will cost $99.99. Home can’t talk to Domains, AD’s or Exchange for one thing… only Business/Professional/Ultimate can do that. OSX only has Desktop and Server editions, so when you buy any Mac you get all the best features…. No second class users with the company trying to take advantage of business users “up the food chain”. People often overlook how complete the software is with OS X compared to Windows, when comparing Windows to OS X.

Anyway, still using XP, and there’s gotta be at least a dozen free burners to choose from. CDBurnerXP, Infrarecorder, and ImgBurn immediately come to mind. I burned a DVD the other day with my MacBook and I didn’t have to buy software for that. The buyer’s program row is about the programs where buyers of the current version get the next version for cheapsies.
